DIY with empty jars

I have been an avid collector of homemade jams and jellies during my trips to different places. Recently, I relocated to Delhi and was busy unpacking ; during the process, I found several cute preserve-bottles of different sizes and shapes lying unused since long. I started by rinsing and cleaning them for potential DIY. Sometimes DIY  is much simpler than we often think it to be. Today I am going to share a few DIY crafts on empty glass jars which can be  used later as a vase, candle holder or simply for storage.

Glitter and glue magic on glass jar

Here are the steps:

1) Take an empty glass jar of any size. Wash it thoroughly  and remove the label by immersing it in detergent and hot water solution for at least half an hour. After half an hour, you can easily peel of the label without any effort. Now dry your bottle by wiping off excess water and keeping it in sun for few minutes. After it has dried fully, give a final wipe with a dry cloth. Your bottle is ready for its make-over.

2) You can take any glue which is light but binds completely with the glass. You can take fevicol and mix it with some water but it should not be runny. Or you can take mod-podge ; whatever you  find easily. Take a glue brush or any flat brush which can be used to apply glue on your bottle.  Choose glitters which you want to use on your bottle and keep them handy. I had glitter-dust of three colors, leftover from my last project, which went unused somehow :P. The next step requires little precision.

3)Take a duct tape and paste it around your bottle, leaving the area on which you want to spread the glitter dust. Apply glue liberally on the leftover space and sprinkle the glitters. Ensure that you spread the glitters uniformly on the un-taped surface. Voila, you have completed one step :)

4) You can change the width of your design by varying the thickness of duct tape used. Peel off the duct tape, revealing the next level of bottle surface and apply glue . Repeat step three.  Likewise you can do more and more horizontal stripes on your jar.

5) After you are done, check if any space is left out and needs filling. Give it sometime to dry and the jar is ready. Decorate any boring window sill with this cute and glittery 'jar-vase' or keep it on your dinner table with a tea-light inside.

Fabric and glue magic on glass jar lid

For this all you need is a colorful piece of cotton fabric.

1) Take the lid of your empty glass jar and cut out a piece of fabric according to its size. Glue the fabric onto lid. Ensure that the cloth is nicely stuck on the lid before proceeding.

 2) Gather the extra cloth, on the inside of the lid, by sewing through its periphery and pulling the ends of the thread. Finish it off by tying the ends in a knot.

3) For a neater look, I pasted a round piece of the same fabric on the inside of the lid too.

Keep in mind, this type of lid can be used for jars to store dry items only.  With a little effort, you can give any lid a trendy look. Happy crafting guys.
